Commencal META AM 3 test

THE BIKE

The META AM new triple-butted 7005 alloy frame has everything you would expect from a well thought and develop Enduro/All Mountain bike. The motto on Commencal site about the new Meta is : "a great enduro bike isn't a cross-country bike that can descend, but a downhiller than can climb" and the geometry of this frame is all about this. Low bottom bracket, slack head tube angle (67-degree) made this bike looking like a baby downhill born from the Commencal DH V3. Tapered head tube, a BB92 press-fit bottom bracket and 142x12 rear hub with Maxle axle make this frame rigid enough for any terrain and trail. Internal cable routing, direct post mount rear brake tabs (180mm), ISCG05 mounts and direct-mount front mech are the other features of the new Commencal Meta. The bike has 150mm of travel and the rear suspension technology is the small scale version of the Contact System EVO flouting design that we found in the DH V3 using , in this entry level model a Fox Float RL. The Meta AM 3 has very good specs like Formula RX brakes, Fox 32 Float RL fork and Mavic XN319 rims rolling on Schwalbe tires ( Knobby Nic front and Rocket Ron rear) . About the gears we have a 2x20 speeds provided by Sram, S1000 crack with X7 front and rear mech . 

 Ο καινούργιος triple-butted 7005 αλουμίνιο σκελετός του Commencal Meta AM έχει ολα αυτά που θα περιμενές απο ένα καλοσχεδιασμένο και εξελιγμένο Enduro/All Mountain ποδηλάτο. Στόχος της Commencal για το νεο Meta είναι : " ενα εκπληκτικό ποδηλάτο enduro δεν είναι απλά ένα cross-country που μπορεί να κατηφορίζει αλλά ένα downhill που κάνει και ανάβαση". Αυτό ακριβώς αντιπροσωπεύει ο σκελετός και η γεωμετρία αυτού του ποδηλάτου. Η χαμηλή μεσαία τριβή, ανικτή γωνία τού ποτηριού (67-degree) κάνουν αυτό το ποδηλάτο να μοιάζει με ενα baby downhill που γεννηθηκέ από το Commencal DH V3. Tapered ποτήρια, BB92 press-fit μεσαία τριβή και 142x12 πίσο κέντρο τροχού με Maxle αξών κάνουν το σκελετό ? για κάθε ??και μονοπάτι. Εσωτερικα καλώδα, direct post mount πίσω φρένο (180mm), ISCG05 mounts και direct mount εμπρός εκτροχιαστής είναι τα χαρακτηριστικά του νεω Commencal Meta AM. Το ποδηλάτο έχει 150mm διαδρομή και η τεχνολογία της πίσω ανάρτησης είναι η έκδοση χαμηλής κλίμακας του σχεδιασμού της Contact System EVO flouting ανάρτησης που προέρχεται από το DH V3, το Meta Am 3 που θα δοκιμάσω είναι εξοπλισμένο με Fox Float RL. Το Meta AM 3 έχει πολύ καλά εξαρτήματα όπως : φρένα Formula RX , Fox 32 Float RL μπροστινή ανάρτηση και Mavic XN319 στεφάνι που κυλούν με Schwalbe λάστιχα ( Knobby Nic το εμπρός και Rocket Ron πίσω). Για ταχύτητες εχούμε 2x20 από την Sram, S1000 Δισκοβραχίονα με X7 εκτροχιαστή εμπρός και πίσω.

THE RIDE

When you first get on the Meta AM, the geometry and the wide handlebar make it feel as you are sitting on a downhill bike.

Because of the inclination of the top tube I had to lift the seatpost all the way up to his limit in order to get comfortable for climbing ( the bike in test was a medium size and I’m 180cm tall), but once start pedalling I realized that is not a downhill bike and this machine can climb. I’m not a big fαn of full locking rear shocks like the Fox rl that equipped the Meta so I decide to unlock it after few meters on the asphalt and I have to admit that was a good idea, more natural feeling leaving the rear floating system to work and more comfort for me but without  too much “bobbing” . This definitely was the best choice for the off road climbing, the suspension system is working really well giving grip on rocks and roots even on a wet day like the day of the test.  When the trail became more technical the Meta had no problem on keeping his momentum over all the obstacles thank also to the pretty low weight ( 13.5kg). The wide bar and short stem make you ride with an aggressive body position even uphill, classic for the modern all mountain bikes, but I have to admit I could not wait to hit the downhill part of the trail.
I’m always very anxious when I’m going to ride downhill some technical fast trails with a new all mountain bike, you never know what to aspect, looking at the bike you can tell a lot, geometry , components, brakes, etc, but riding it is another story and this new generation of “ do it all” bikes sometime can really surprise you in good and in bad. Sometime they can climb like XC but downhill are disappointing other times they can downhill really well but there is no way to pedal them , and other time they do nothing to good or nothing too bad but they don’t  stand out.  The Meta did prove me to be able of climbing but, could confirm his motto “…a downhiller that can climb”?
Yes indeed!  The Meta really feels like a mini downhill.
 Cornering is probably the best skill of this bike. The low bottom bracket and the rigid frame help flying from one turn to the other and when the turn is rough the new suspension design is keeping the rear wheel down to the ground.  This four bar linkage flouting system is very progressive and gives the feeling of an endless travel  giving you the confidence for riding faster and hitting jumps and drops, very stable in the air and steady in the landing.
High speed single tracks is where  this bike really comes in his world and it’s so enjoyable that you feel like giving a couple of pedal strokes here and there in order  to gain more speed and have more fun and there is no worries about slowing down  because the Formula Rx brakes are perfect, powerful and progressive they are able to stop any time you need.

Οταν ανέβεις  για πρώτη φορά στο Meta AM το πλατύ τιμόνο του αλλά και η γεωμετρία του σε κάνουν να νοιώθεις οτι κάθεσαι σε ένα downhill ποδήλατο.

Ξεκηνώντος την ανάβαση λόγω της κλίσης του top tube χρειάστηκε να ανεβάσω το λαιμό της σελας στο υψηλότερο σημείο ωστε να είμαι άνετος (το ποδήλατο που δοκίμασα ήταν μεσαίου μεγέθους και έχω υψος 180εκ.), οστώσο στις πρώτες πεταλιές συνειδητοποίησα οτι δεν είναι ενα downhill ποδήλατο αλλά ενα “μηχάνημα” πολύ καλό για ανάβαση. Δεν έιμαι μεγάλος θαυμαστής του lock-out κλειδώματος όπως το  πίσω Fox Float RL που έχει πάνω το Meta AM 3 κι έτσι αποφάσισα να ξεκλειδώσω όσο ήμουν ακόμα στην άσφαλτο ,ήταν πολύ καλή ιδέα τελικά,μια αίσθηση πιο φυσική αφήνοντας το floating system να λειτουργήσει και περισσότερη άνεση χωρίς πολύ “bobbing”. Αυτή ήταν η καλύτερη επιλογή και για την ανάβαση εκτός δρομου.Το σύστημα ανάρτησης λειτουργούσε άψογα δίνοντας πολυ καλό κράτημα όταν περνούσα απο κοτρόνες ή ρίζες δέντρων ακόμα κι αν η μέρα ήταν βροχερή ,οπώς έτυχε να είναι αυτή του τεστ.Οταν η διαδρομή γιινόταν πιο τεχνική το Meta δεν είχε κανένα πρόβλημα,κρατώντας ορμή ενάντια σε όλα τα εμπόδια,χάρη και στο χαμηλό του βάρος(13.5 χλγρ).Το φαρδύ τιμόνι και ο κοντός λαιμός σε κάνουν να καβαλάς σε επιθετική θέση ακόμα και όταν είσαι στην ανάβαση,οπώς τα περισσότερα all mountain ποδήλατα ,αλλά πρεπεί να παραδεχθώ οτι αυτό ποθ περίμενα περισσότερο απ ολα ήταν η κατάβαση.

Πάντα έχω μια ανυσηχία όταν κανώ downhill σε δύσκολες και τεχνικές διαδρομές έχοντας ένα καινούριο all mountain.Ποτέ δεν ξέρεις τι να περιμένεις.Σίγουρα κοιτώντας το ποδήλατο μπορείς να καταλάβεις πολλά,τη γεωμετρία του,τα εξαρτήματα,τα φρένα κ.τ.λ. αλλά όταν το καβαλάς είναι άλλη υπόθεση,και άλλωστε τα ποδήλατα νέας γενιάς τύπου τα κανει ολα μπορεί να σε εκπλήξουν είτε θετικά είτε αρνητικά.Μερικές φορές στην ανάβαση τα enduro/all mountain θυμίζουν cross country,άλλα στην κατάβαση μπορεί να σε απογοητεύσουν,άλλες φορές είναι εξαιρετικά στην κατάβαση αλλά  είναι αδύνατο να κάνεις πετάλι  ή απλά να μην σου κάνουν καμμία εντύπωση ούτε καλή ούτε κακή.Το Meta αποδείχθηκε ικανότατο στη ανάβαση επιβαβαιώνοντας και το…….. του “….ενα downhill που μπόρει να κάνει και ανάβαση”?

Ναι πράγματι!το Meta το νοιωθεις σαν ενα mini downhill.

Ισως η καλύτερη ικανότητα αυτού του ποδηλάτου να είναι το στρίψιμο.Η χαμηλή μεσαία τριβή και ο άκαμπτος σκελετός του βοηθούν το πέρασμα απο τη μια τροφή στην επόμενη ακόμα και όταν το εδαφος είναι σκλήρο ο νέος σχεδιασμός της ανάρτησης κρατάει την πισω ρόδα καλα στο έδαφος.Αυτός ο σχεδιασμός της είναι πολύ εξελιγμένος και δινει την αισθηση οτι η διαδρομή είναι ατελείωτη δίνοντας σου τη αυτοπεποίθηση να καβαλήσεις πιο γρήγορα ,περνώντας αλματα και drops με σταθεροτητα τοσο στον αέρα όσο και στην προσγείωση.

Στενά μονοπάτια οπού μπορείς να καβαλήσεις σε υψηλές ταχύτητες είναι το μέρος οποθ αυτό το ποδήλατο βρίσκει τον πραγματικό του εαυτό,γίνεται τοσο διασκεδαστικό ωστέ να θελεις να κανεις ακομα μερικές πεταλιές ωστε να αυξήσεις ταχύτητα χωρίς να ανυσηχείς για το πψς θα σταματήσεις διοτι τα φρένα Formula RX ειναι τέλεια,δυναμικα και τοσο εξελιγμένα ώστε να μπρεΙς να σταματήσεις οποτεδήποτε μπορείς.

 TOTAL

The Meta confirmed the aspectation of a do it all and do it well bike. The best is given downhill and is easy to ride and have fun with it. My only concern is the rear Fox Float RL shock and the tires. I don’t like the lock on/off system on the shock and I think that with a Propedal  (Like the more expensive Meta AM2) the bike would just be perfect. The Schwalbe tires have a good design but foldable tires on this kind of bikes are just a bad choice, you have to ride careful of puncture and it’s a petty because the Meta deserves to go fast!

Το Meta AM 3 επιβααίωσε τις απαιτήσεις μου εις το έπακρον ενος ποδηλάτου που τα κάνει όλα και καλά.Η καλύτερη απόδοση του βρίσκεται στο downhill. Είναι εύκολο και διασκεδαστικό.Η μοναδική μου ανυσηχία είναι η πισω Fox Float RL ανάρτηση και τα λάστιχα.Δεν μου άρεσε το σύστημα lock on/off και πιστεύω οτι με ενα Propedal το ποδήλατο θα ήταν τέλειο(όπως τα πιο ακριβά AM 2).Τα λάστιχα Schwalbe εχούν καλό σχειδασμό αλλά χρειάζεται λίγο προσοχή γιατι ειναι ευκολο με σκληρη χρηση να σκασει η σαμπρέλα διότι το Meta αξίζει να πηγαίνει γρηγορα!
